How to find an apartment?
As in many
places, finding a good apartment for rent in France can be difficult (and Paris
a headache). It regularly takes time - in some cases several weeks - to find
what you are looking for.
Looking for an apartment
To find a
good place to live, you have to be patient and persistent. As in many places,
it is usually a long, slow and frustrating process. A typical search can last 2
- 3 weeks, in Paris it can be much longer. Do not think you're going to find
something and you'll move to your new place in a few days!
The best
period to find a place to live is from May to July. August is usually difficult
since people are on vacation. September and October are usually the worst
months, as people return on vacation and students are just beginning the new
school year. Christmas is also a bad date to look for spaces.
Finding a
good apartment before arriving in France is difficult. Renters prefer to meet
their new tenants before signing a contract, and it is not advisable to rent an
apartment without having seen it before. If you need to have something rented
for when you arrive, you can contact a rental service agency, although it will
be a little more expensive.
Contemplate
walking a lot. It is a good opportunity to know the city in which you are going
to live. The first thing you have to do is to know the neighborhood (quarters
/ advertisements). Buy a guide to the streets (crate or plan) and start
acquainting yourself with the public transport lines. Explore different areas,
ask people and spend a lot of time hanging around. This will help you decide
where you want to live. Keep in mind the differences that you find differences
that you find within the city.
